About

Matías Gárate is a geometric artist – formerly an astrophysicist – specialized in creating illustrations of “Impossible Figures”, using both traditional sketching and digital 3D techniques.
His artworks make use of spatial contradictions that capture the viewer’s curiosity, and invites them to wonder: “What if reality worked differently?”.

In his own words:
“I found my passion for creating “impossible figures” during the last year of my PhD in Astronomy, and continued developing the technique in parallel to my academic career. After showcasing my artworks in two exhibitions and concluding my last research contract I felt that I was ready to explore making art professionally, and so, with the support of my family and friends I made the career switch here in Luxembourg.
For me, these artworks have become the meeting point of my interests in both mathematics and arts, and they are my way of exploring everything that makes me curious. With my workshops I hope that I can share that very same feeling of curiosity, and give you a fun experience as you discover how to create your very own paradox.”
